Do students need prior knowledge or experience?
Beginners class is on Saturday. Beginners are those who have never taken a workshop from me in the past. All levels are welcome for the Saturday workshop and beginners can sign up for the Sunday - Intermediate workshop after taking the Saturday Beginners class. Sunday class is for intermediate level
Class size limited to 15.
Course/Workshop Description:
In this course students will work with Pastels on sanded paper. Each student should bring a set of at least 48 NuPastels - a full set is 96 and would be helpful but not necessary. Addition of Sennelier Plein Air Landscape 80 1/2 Sticks could be added at a later date if the student falls in love with pastels. Sanded paper, rubbing alcohol and brushes will be provided by the teacher.
Also recommended for the class would be
1) notebook
2) Small drawing board ( can be constructed out of foam core - no cardboard, please)
3) masking tape
4) paper towels
5) baby wipes to clean your hands
Students will learn how to handle pastels, layering effect, color choices, composition tips. On Saturday morning Beginner class will work with pastels in free form method to get use to how to handle pastels. Teacher will give a short lecture on hardness of soft pastels and different textures of sanded papers. In the afternoon the beginner class will create a landscape using Marianna’s Step-by-step technique. It’ll be fun, I promise. On Sunday the Intermediate class will create a landscape using pastel and alcohol to create an underpainting before layering the colors on top.

Artist’s Biography
Marianna McDonald has been creating art since she was 13 yrs old. At Murray State University she majored in art with an emphasis on painting and graphic design. Throughout life’s demands including 14 years at the Herald-Leader as a graphic designer, she continued to produce oil paintings, then watercolor and finally discovered pastels in 1983. Pastels are a particularly good media for working busy parents. After being downsized from the herald-leader in 2001, Marianna launched McDonald Fine Art with a concentration on showing pastels at art fairs throughout the region, teaching pastels to adults and showing work in galleries. Marianna has a studio at Artists’ Attic. Her work is part of the art collections at UK Hospital, St. Joseph hospital and hospitals in Owensboro, KY, and Columbus, OH, She is represented by Main Cross Gallery, Lexington KY. Ralice Gallery in Ft. Mitchell, KY and The District Gallery in Knoxville, TN
